  • 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) chilled unsalted butter, diced

Filling

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Stir sugar and butter in large skillet over medium heat until smooth sauce forms. Add lemon juice and cook, stirring, until caramel is deep brown, about 5 minutes. • Bake crisp until apples are tender, sauce is bubbling thickly, and topping is golden, about 50 minutes. Let crisp cool 15 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream.

Caramel Apple Crisp

Something about the words “apple crisp” just makes me feel all cozy inside. I immediately think about colorful fall leaves, comfy sweaters, and crisp autumn air. Probably because the only time we had apple crisp growing up was in the fall time when fresh farm apples were everywhere.

I could always tell when apple crisp was in the oven from that signature buttery, cinnamon apple caramel aroma! It is heaven and I can truly say that every part of the apple crisp is my FAVORITE!

My grandmother always diced up tiny pieces of caramel chews and sprinkled it throughout the apple crisp. It gave it that simple extra something and now I find myself doing the exact same thing. I mean if you’re gonna have apple crisp you might as well have caramel apple crisp right?

This caramel apple crisp is divine! Loaded with tart, granny smith apples that compliments the sweet caramel and that buttery, cinnamon oatmeal crisp topping so well. It’s sweet but not too sweet for a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side! Speaking of which, is apple crisp really complete without vanilla ice cream? It just seems….unnatural. So be natural.

This caramel apple crisp is such a comforting classic dessert and comes together so easily with simple ingredients. It’s the perfect ending to a fall dinner and company worthy.

If you’ve got yourself some apples you need to get rid of I implore (new word I can’t stop using) you to make this caramel apple crisp recipe….like… ASAP!!

Delicious, I used Fuji apple.

The caramel recipe could be better. I will use the one from Chocolate Bread pudding with Caramel Pecan sauce next time. I tossed the apples with pumpkin pie spice as I was out of cinnamon. I then drizzled the caramel on top of the tossed apples in the baking dish and then dropped the crumble on top. It made this amazing triple layer of apple/caramel and crunch! I really don't like almond extract so I used ground pecans instead.

I thought this was just OK - making the caramel seemed like an added step that didn't really add all that much to the flavor. Not a bad recipe though!

Loved this dessert. Only tricky part was when I added the caramel to the apples it tended to clump around the apples and wanted to settle on the bottom of the bowl. Tried to even it out before and after putting into the baking dish. Was delicious but wondered if others had that happen or have suggestions for a better way. Good suggestion from others to double the topping.

This was a hit at a gathering last night and will never use another recipe. I doubled the topping and served with blue bell homemade vanilla ice cream. (added 1/2 tsp cinnamon to filling)

This is a favorite in my house. Great for breakfast with greek yogurt too!

Double the topping, making half of it oatmeal (adds a great texture), and used just a little more than 1/2 of the sugar called for, or else it would have been way too sweet. Also, add cinnamon and ground cloves, to taste! A delicious recipe!!

Question for the people doubling the topping: do you then double the amount you reserve for the filling?

I gave this recipe a 4, but, with some modifications. I doubled the topping as recommended and added a touch of cinnamon to the filling. I had no problem with the caramel, but, it turns amber very quickly because there is no liquid in there. My topping, however, was very dry as there was no liquid at all n that, just cold butter, and not enough to make it moist. I ended up adding water by the tablespoon full just until I started to see moist clumps. It worked perfectly and the topping, as well as the filling were delicious!

Hmm, I couldn't taste the caramel at all, despite only using 2 instead of 4 pounds of apples. Granted, it was fun to make, and the crisp - made from tart apples picked from the garden an hour before - was yummy but no different from your garden-variety (pun intended) crisp that's much less effort.

Just baked this for my in-laws, it was a hit. The only change I would make for next time (and there will be a next time) is to mix half Granny Smith and half Gala and will top with a little whipping cream. Yum!

I took the advice of another reviewer and added a bit of spice to the caramel filling. I was instantly sorry that I did. The wonderful caramel aroma was instantly gone. Next time I will omit the almond extract as well. Caramel, vanilla and apple is more than enough. No need to guild the lily.

This recipe was so amazing! I made it for a Thanksgiving dinner we were attending and everyone raved. a couple of adjustments I made: One, the host has a gluten allergy, so I cooked the crisp separately on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes while the apples were cooking on another rack. Honestly, I think this made the recipe even better! The crisp was SO perfectly crunchy! Two, I added cinnamon, all spice, ginger and sugar to the apples and tossed them before adding the caramel. Again, I think this really made the dish pop. The spice was one of the best parts, and without it I think it would have been a bit bland. I did make a bit of extra caramel as well based on other reviews. Topped with some vanilla ice cream. to die for! Even with the apples and ice cream alone, my friend loved it and appreciated the gluten free option.

I doubled the topping and made half again of the caramel, both of which I would do again (caramel is 1 cup sugar, scant 1/3 cup liquid and 4.5 T butter). I added cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger to the topping, which I probably wouldn't do again because it detracted from the apple flavor also added 1/2 oatmeal which made the topping too hard for my taste. I subbed apple brandy for the liquid in the caramel, which I wouldn't do again because it didn't add anything. I would probably go with the gentleman's suggestion of using frozen apple concentrate to boost the apple flavor in the caramel. It was good, easy and fun to make, but not really special enough for Thanksgiving.

I also doubled the topping (but used 1 C of oatmeal instead of a second cup of flour). I added a teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/2 t ground ginger as some other reviewers suggested. Unfortunately, I think this covered the taste of the caramel, but it was a fabulous crisp regardless. Even better cold the next day!

Searching for a recipe that didn't include dough for a Thanksgiving dessert to bring to dinner, I came across this recipe. DELICIOUS! Taking the advice of others I added cinnamon to the caramel and topping mixture as well as doubling the topping. This will be my go-to recipe for winter desserts from now on.

This was delicious!! I made it gluten free by using some gluten free bread croutons that I were extra from my stuffing. I also did half oatmeal. Loved the caramel flavor and the almonds!!

We love this recipe and I have made it several times. The caramel really elevates this crisp. We like a bit more texture in our crisp, so I use a mixture of 1/2 cup each of oats and flour for the topping.

Well, yes, I will make it again, but here is a simple but worthwhile tip. Forget the quarter cup of apple juice and replace it with a quarter cup of frozen apple juice concentrate! Even with drier apples, this will spike up the flavor and moisture on most apple baking creations, including pies. Although a recipe I found calling for some apple concentrate did not recommend frozen concentrate, this is a knock-out flavor helper.

This is an exceptional apple crisp. I doubled the topping as suggested and was glad I did. I also made a bit more caramel. Served with creme fraiche. I loved it, my friends loved it.. Can't wait to make it again.

Excellent Apple Crisp. More prep work than your average crisp, but better than average. I took the advice of others & doubled the topping. I made the topping in advance & kept it in the refrigerator for 2 days -- the crisp was still great. I used Gala & Honeycrisp apples. Heated the leftover crisp in the oven the next day, still wonderful. I would make it for company. Enjoy!

Delish! Warning. this might be obvious to people who cook all the time, but DO NOT take a little taste with your finger when making the caramel. It will harden on your finger and burn it badly. Yep. learned that the hard way. :( Other than that, I followed the advice of other reviews. I added cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin pie spice to the topping. Just several dashes of all 3. And, I did the 1/2 flour, 1/2 oatmeal. It was really good. Other change: I didn't have apple juice, but I did have chardonnay. Used 1/4 cup of that instead and it was perfect. Other change: I used 3 different kinds of apples that I got at the farmer's market. That made it interesting and we were able to taste the different apples and see which ones we liked the best. I peeled them and then used the apple corer/slicer set to 16 pieces. So fast and easy. I also coarsely chopped whole almonds instead of getting the pre-sliced ones. Oh and you must serve it warm with vanilla ice cream. My friends and LOVED it.

Boring. I was really disappointed in this recipe. No caramel flavor.

I tweaked this recipe a bit and loved the outcome. I couldn't imagine an apple crisp without spices, so I added 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, and 1/8 teaspoon cloves to the topping. I also subbed old fashioned oats for half the flour to give it more texture and crunch. I followed the recipe exactly in every other way and it turned out wonderfully. As another reviewer noted, the caramel seems a bit lumpy at first, but it cooks down beautifully in the oven.

This was incredible! I forgot to add the slivered almonds but did add the extract. Yum, yum, yum, yum.

  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ C light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/3 C granulated sugar
  • 1/3 C light brown sugar

  • ½ C butter, cold and cubed (use palm shortening for dairy free)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x9 inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the prepared apples, orange zest, lemon zest, lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Mix well and pour into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the caramel pieces over the top, evenly distributing them.
  3. To make the topping, add the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and oats to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix to combine.
  4. Add the cubed butter (or shortening) and mix on low to incorporate. When the dough starts to come together, crumble it over the top of the apples.

  6. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

Notes

Use new caramels if you can. Old caramels have a tendency to get hard.

Thursday 23rd of November 2017

I just made this. Delicious! Really sweet, though. Next time I will use less caramel or skip out altogether. The top was divine.

Monday 27th of November 2017

Glad you liked it! The sweetness is to our liking but definitely feel free to use a little less caramel or sugar next time if that's how you prefer :)

This was the best apple crisp I've ever tasted! The lemon and orange zest really make it bright and autumnal. The topping is deliciously crispy. I doubled the whole thing and put it in a 13 x 9 baking dish. I made the non-gf version. Thanks! Will be making this every Thanksgiving FOR SURE.

Thanks for the feedback Stephanie! So glad you liked it as much as we do!

Caramel Apple Crisp Pizza

Whew!! This has been the longest time I’ve ever gone without creating a blog post/video. I thought about you guys every single day! Did you miss me? Say yes, even if you didn’t ok. Oh where have I been you ask? MOVING to a new city. Woo-hoo!! Can you say, exhausting!? I don’t think I ever want to go through the moving process again and I think I’ll be perfectly fine to never see a cardboard box for a very very long time!!

Pecans would be great in the topping!

Anyway we are finally unpacked, settled in and I’m ready to cook!! Actually I’ve already been cooking up a storm in my new kitchen. Oh how I LOOOOVE my new kitchen y’all!! It feels amazing to have more space, organization and sunlight. I never knew how much my old kitchen hindered my productivity. It just wasn’t fun to be in at all. Since moving I’ve been making breakfast , lunch and dinner every single day . It’s like I have this new found love of cooking!

Pass the vanilla ice cream!!

I couldn’t wait to share this amazing Apple Crisp Pizza recipe with you guys. I adapted this recipe from my favorite cooking magazine Taste of Home. It was one of the first dishes I made in my new home and this baby got nailed the first night. It’s comforting, DELICIOUS and the perfect end to a hearty fall dinner. And man, talk about addictive. Everytime I’d go into the kitchen I’d see another little slice missing. We just couldn’t get enough of this stuff.

I knew this dessert would be dangerous for me being that I just can’t resist apple crisp or apple pie. This sinful thing combines them both so beautifully and then it has the nerve to add caramel sauce to finish it off. Have mercy. Add a side of vanilla ice cream and you will be one happy person. It’s pretty sweet so be prepared! If you can’t handle really sweet dessert (is that even normal?) then go light on the caramel sauce

Ingredients

This recipe is very easy to make and only has 9 ingredients. The most important is the apples. You’ll also need:

  • Sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Oats
  • Flour
  • (Optional) Flake salt

What Apples to Use?

Since there is a lot of sugar in this dessert, you don’t need to add sweet apples to the mix. In fact, the more tart the apple, the better. It adds a much needed acid that helps cut through the decadent caramel sauce.

Granny Smith apples are my favorite to use in this recipe. They offer the perfect balance or tartness and firmness. They won’t break down under the heat, so they have enough bite.

Red delicious and gala apples, which are two of the easiest to find, don’t do particularly well in this recipe. They tend to disintegrate under the heat and become too mushy. Honeycrisp apples are too sweet and the crunch doesn’t stick around after baked.

Other apples you can use in this recipe are Golden Delicious and Pink Lady. If you want to get creative, use a combination of apples for a variety of flavors and textures in your crisp

Caramel Apple Crisp

Impress your friends and family with this tasty and delicious Apple Crisp. The Best Caramel Apple Crisp Ever really deserves this name.

Ingredients

  • APPLE FILLING
  • 3 apples - peeled and sliced (I used Granny Smith)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp milk or water
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • CRISP TOPPING
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • pinch of salt
  • SWEETENED WHIPPED CREAM (VANILLA ICE CREAM) AND CARAMEL SAUCE

Instructions

  1. APPLE FILLING:
  2. Pour milk or water, lemon juice, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, brown sugar, pinch of salt, flour and butter in a medium bowl. Stir until it becomes smooth. Set aside.
  3. Peel the apples and cut them into thin slices. Place the apples in an 8x8 inch baking dish, coat them in the apple filling. Leave aside.
  4. TOPPING:
  5. Mix flour, rolled oats, baking powder, pinch of salt, ground cinnamon and brown sugar in a large bowl. Add chopped butter and stir well until it resembles small crumbs.
  6. Coat evenly the apples with the resulting mixture.
  7. Bake at 375F, for 25-30 minutes.

Notes

Serve cool with Sweetened Whipped Cream or Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce.

Apple crisp works great prepared a day in advance and you can freeze it, as well. Just make sure it is sealed in an airtight container, then re-bake it at 350 F for about 25 minutes.

Yum! Sounds perfect for this cold weekend.

Caramel is a weakness for me, and something I don’t often get to have since we are a dairy free house. This is absolutely going into my meal plan for next week!

In regards to applesauce, I make mine a super easy way. Peeled cored apples and some water in a large pot. Cook until they are all mushy, adding water as needed so nothing sticks. Once they are all cooked down I add a bit of lemon juice, then puree with a stick blender. I have bags and bags of it in my freezer for my 2 applesauce junkies. I get big boxes of less than perfect apples at the farmers market for a lower price which makes it super affordable. Much cheaper than buying jars, and no added sugar!

I have to thank you for posting this, it looks delicious and is going to be part of my Thanksgiving Pot Luck Dinner.

Thank you OVER and OVER for putting dairy-free or easy to adapt to dairy-free desserts on your site!! My daughter will be SO excited!!

I make crisps myself. Easier than pies. My mom made them alot too. I make berry crisps as well. I will have to try this one.
I helped make caramel corn and apples at our church harvest festival on Sunday evening. Cindy had Peggy and I help with that from a recipe of brown sugar, butter, evaporated milk and vanilla. It was drizzled over the popcorn and the apples, yummy! Better tasting than the use of caramel candy that you melt! This was Cindy’s grandmother’s recipe.

Can you give me the exact measurements for the caramel sauce you used for popcorn? Thanks.

I will definitely be trying this-my family and I will love this!

I had some apples to use up Friday and made this. It is the best Apple crisp I have ever had. I didn’t have either ice cream or whipped cream so I poured some cold milk over the top. Yum..I don’t think it could be any better. Thanks for the recipe.

So I just made this and Well its baking and smells amazing however didnt have nutmeg but i used a bit of saigon..lets see how this comes out. It was pretty easy to make and the crust was easy but i did have difficutly on the consistancy. But ill see if i made it right in about 30 min. thank you, my hubby is a HUGE fan of caramel desserts…Now all i need to learn how to make is the bread pudding.

Made this last Tuesday and everyone ate it! I could have eaten the whole thing it was so great! I wish I had Vanilla ice cream to go with it. thank you!

I love this recipe! I’ve made it about 4x in the past few weeks with apples being so cheap. I’m making two for Thanksgiving today: one to take to each of our families.

Addicting Caramel Apple Crisp Bars

  • Author: Pinch of Yum
  • Prep Time: 10 mins
  • Cook Time: 45 mins
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 12 large bars or 16 – 18 smallish bars 1 x

Description

These layered bars are so simple! Loaded with homemade caramel and apples. Caramely apple layer tucked in by a brown sugar-y crust on both sides.

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups flour(see notes)

For the Filling

  • 4 small apples
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cream or half and half
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Crust: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Beat the butter and brown sugar with electric mixers until creamy. Add the cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and flour. The mixture should be crumbly. Set aside one cup of the mixture press the rest into a 9吉 baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12 minutes.
  2. Filling: Quarter the apples and scoop out seeds/core. Slice the apple quarters with a mandoline slicer to get ultra paper thin slices (or slice by hand, cutting as thin as possible). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the brown sugar when the sugar is incorporated and the mixture is JUST about to start bubbling, add the cream and stir until a creamy sauce forms. It should coat the back of a spoon.
  3. Assembly: When the crust is done, arrange the apples in an even layer over the crust and pour the caramel over the top. Sprinkle with remaining crust crumbles from step one. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar for sparkle and crunch. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Remove from oven, lift out of the pan using the edges of the parchment paper, and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes. Cut and serve.

Notes

When measuring the flour, I usually just scoop my measuring cup right into the bag. If you are normally more precise with the spoon-measuring, you might need a little more flour to make up for the difference. Just look at the texture – if the dough forms crumbles, you’re good.
